Would performing a Registry fix on my computer break files?

I have been told to do a registry fix on my computer the make it run faster, But I am scared in case it moves files around and the file path goes missing and ruins my saved project files? What does the registry fix actually do and is it possible for it to change file paths and ruin project files?

Theoretically a good registry cleaner won’t harm anything. But from experience, they sometimes do – even the best ones. So, definitely back up any personal data you have first.
Most reg cleaners will scan the registry "first" before doing anything – then they’ll give you a long list of fixes and let you choose the ones you want. These can often be very confusing. So, whatever cleaner you use, just tell it to do the "minimum" fixes first – don’t let it go totally crazy. Then if that doesn’t help the speed of your PC, you can run it again and let it try to totally fix the registry.
CCleaner ( http://www.ccleaner.com/ ) is a very popular free cleaner and usually does a good job, but I’ve also seen it totally screw up a PC or 2.
I don’t know what OS you run, but if the reg gets totally screwed and won’t boot, Windows will "usually" bring you to a screen at bootup that gives you the option to restore the old registry before you ruined it.

Other possible things to try to increase performance -
1. Check and eliminate most background programs. Go to Start, Run, type MSCONFIG in the box and click the Startup tab. Un-check as many apps as possible (I only have 3 checked). Google each one to see what it does.
2. If you’ve got more than 1 anti-virus app running – eliminate all but 1. And look at it’s settings and tone them down a bit. If you’ve got AV checking every mouse click you’ll run very slow.
3. If you’ve got less than 2GB of RAM, adding ram will usually speed you up quite a bit.
4. Consider nuking the machine. Doing a total Restore, Recover, or Reformat will "completely" get rid of ALL junk, viruses, adware, etc. and I guarantee you’ll run good as new. But, you’ll lose everything – so back up. Most mainstream PC’s come with the ability to Restore to factory defaults even without any CD’s – the recover files are hidden on the hard drive (look up your model on the maker’s support site).
Good luck,
Donk

Where can I find a good, free Registry Fix program?

I’m currently using Advanced System Care 3 but it’s not scanning when I click for it to Scan. I get this problem constantly and am tired of it.

Can anyone else recommend a Registry Fix program that works just as nicely for no cost?

ccleaner.com has a good registry tool

Any recomendations for using a registry fix type program ?

I am using vista ultimate and have considered purchasing a registry fix type program. Is this worth it or will it cause more problems?

I use something called RegCleaner. It was free when I downloaded it. I am quite happy with it – works quite well. I went back to their website but it doesn’t seem to be available now. They do have some other registry tools available there, but not for free. Check them out.

Are doing registry fix scans on my computer any good, and if so does anyone have any recommendations?

I’ve recently done a registryfix scan on my computer and it said there were a lot of things wrong with my computer. So I wanted to know if I should spend the money to buy the software from the site, or if they are just a waste of money.

If you are not a tech then I strongly recommend you leave your registry alone.

Changing things in the registry, especially en mass with some crapware, is a great way to really mess up your computer.

If you have a specific problem that requires a change to your registry… then you’re far better off finding a reliable and highly qualified tech to handle it… or backing up the registry and very very carefully correcting that one particular issue by itself.

Good Luck
