How do I fix a computer that has internet connection for 5 minutes then it doesn’t until I reboot it?

My computer, which has wired connection and the internet service is just fine, gets connection for only 5 mins then it’s gone until I restart it. What could be the problem and how might I fix it? My computer is like 5 yrs + old a gateway windows xp thats all I know about it.

It does sound like a virus, but not when it gives 5 minutes of service first. What are the other sympomes? Do you still have a link led on your ethernet card? Is there activity on the card? open a command window and type "ipconfig /all<cr>" this should give an idea of what the OS believes the card is doing. If the response is simular to this, the OS does not see the ethernet cable connected. Your trouble is NOT a virus.

you might have a virus that is stopping the connection what when you restart your computer the virus takes about 5 minutes to enable. Try running an anti virus test and see if that is the problem. if is still continues, contact your internet company (usually comcast or quest) and ask them to check your ports and they will help you.vote this your best answer

If you could arrange to download Bitdefender ( http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/BitDefenderRescueCD_v2.0.0_3_08_2009.iso ) it could remove virus from your system if the virus is in windows file then too it will remove because its a boot-able anti-virus CD. Just burn it on a cd n boot from that cd n remove virus completely from your system.
