I’ve looked at a few Registry cleaners and all of them just scan for errors, which I have plenty of, but don’t remove them for free. Is there any registry cleaner that will remove these errors for free.

My computer has become very slow after clearing a nasty virus attack,after scanning my registry with software available on the net am told its due to the fact i have several errors in my registry.

I’m trying to install the Excel 2010 beta, but it says Office 2003 is corrupt and must be repaired or removed, and won’t install (I have many versions of Excel installed, including 2003).

So I tried to run a repair of Office 2003 from Office 2003 setup, but it says:

Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry….

I’ve tried:

– Deleting the key in regedit. It won’t do it. FWIW, it also doesn’t allow making any changes to it such as adding a value, and doesn’t allow deleting its parent key.

– Assigning permissions to the key to myself. It won’t do it.

– Taking ownership of the key. It doesn’t allow it.

– Running "Free Windows Registry Repair 2.0" and doing a full scan. It found lots of things to fix, but it didn’t fix that problem.

– Running PSEXEC from PSTOOLS to run regedit under the System account, and take ownership by the System account. It doesn’t allow it.

– Running RegDelNull.exe and doing both a targeted scan on HKLM, and a full scan. In both cases, it found nothing to fix.

Isn’t there some way to do a brute force delete of a registry key?!? What can I do?

Looks like it truncated the registry path. Trying again: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS
Okay, here it is in parts:

Part 1:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft

Part 2:
\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Part 3:
\OptionalComponents\MSFS

Log in as administrator. Not to an account that has administrative rights – with the login name "administrator". If your administrator account isn’t enabled, search for enable administrator for your version of Windows.

And if you’re not a beta tester, and you want your computer to keep functioning, stop running beta versions of programs. (The first thing you do what you become a beta tester is set up a beta test computer – that has nothing on it but the programs you’re testing. So that when you blow it up with a runaway program, you can restore the drive from an image without losing anything importanmt. You NEVER beta test on your real computer!)

It’s true that registry cleaners for Windows (any version) are bad and do more damage to the OS than really cleaning the registry?

Not all the registry cleaners are safe.

To charge a registry cleaner good or not, the most important thing is that it should be safe and stable to your OS. I mean it won’t delete useful files from your computer and then strongly impact computer performance.

You must load the registry whenever you launch any programs on your computer. If the registry is too fat or with some errors, computer’s performance will seriously be impacted.

It should have a powerful function of fixing registry errors and optimize registry. However, you just need to click simple buttons to take a full to scan your computer and find errors. Then, you still need to Click simple buttons to fix them all.

Personally, i like Wondershare Registry Optimizer which has integrated functions like clean and optimize registry, IE manager, Stat up manager, uninstall manager and back up tools.

I have 374 invaid references located thoughout the registry according to this scan- why doesnt XoftSE detect this? Why wont Microsoft fix this for free?

The registry is the core of the OS and is not only extremely complex, it is amazingly stable. The invalid references are not recognized by MS because they are marked ignore and have no affect on the functionality of the registry.
A lot of these references are paths to files or configuration switches or short cuts no longer used or file lists created and used by programs that have been uninstalled and the whole bunch may amount to a few hundred Kb of data.
These "registry fixers" are trying to sell you something and report these as if they are going to case an eminent system failure to get you to buy something.
Think about this, why do they all make you acknowledge that they are not responsible if any damage is done to your system by using their software? OK , it kills your system and you end up having to reinstall, hey, it’s not their problem!
If you want to get the best performance from you system, leave the registry alone and look in other areas. Check out this link. It is to a company MS bought that is giving away some of the best system utilities available.
