Why Clean the Windows Computer System Registry?
A lot of things can cause your computer to slow down. Downloaded spyware and adware will cause your computer to run slowly as will
installed ActiveX controls. These programs create many entries in the Windows registry causing your computer to run more slowly each
time. A great way to clean these unwanted entries out is to install a good registry cleaner program.
What is the Windows registry?
In the early days of the Windows life cycle, Microsoft needed a way for the Windows operating system to keep a record of file and user
information so Windows could find them quickly. In the beginning this information was stored in INI files located in the INI folder and
there was no software available to clean these files out. These files just kept growing, causing the computer to slow down as the system
had to read more and more files to operate correctly.
Microsoft created the registry to overcome the shortcomings of INI files and was first introduced with Windows 3.1 in the early 1990′s.
The Windows Registry is a database where Windows stores information and settings for installed hardware, operating system software, non
operating system software and user settings.
Registry Problems
However this created its own problems. The registry also expands as software is installed, as every piece of software installs information
into the registry as does any hardware installed into the system. This leads to increased memory overhead, which causes the system to slow

down as more software is installed. Software that doesn’t uninstall properly or does not have an uninstaller app will leave entries in the
registry. This will cause ‘software rot’ as the registry gets full of orphaned and malfunctioning entries. With large amounts of data stored
in the registry the speed of the system will suffer due to the sheer size of information.
Manually Editing the Registry
The registry can be edited manually with REGEDIT.EXE or REGEDT32.EXE, however to remove software entries manually is all but impossible due
to the sheer number of entries created by installing a software program. Also the entries are often random hexadecimal numbers that have
no resemblance to the software installed. However the biggest problem is the irreversible damage that could be done to your computer
system if the registry is edited wrongly. You should therefore always backup the Windows operating system registry before any changes
are made to the registry.
Using a Registry Cleaner
You can use a commercially available registry cleaner to clean and optimise the registry database. These utilities will scan your entire
Windows registry for any invalid or obsolete entries and will list the registry errors found. You can then choose to clean the listed
items individually or automatically repair them all.
For your convenience and protection, the registry cleaners normally also provide a backup mechanism for any repaired files so that you
can easily recover any changes if required.
