What can I do to stop my computer from freezing up?

I am running Windows XP, don’t have much on my hard drive, havent download any viruses and have no screwed around with the registry to my knowledge. The only major thing I have put on my computer recently is iTunes which I don’t use that much. My computer freezes up several times a day.

Is there any way to diagnose or try to fix this problem WITHOUT having to reformat my hard drive? I’m trying to avoid having to buy an external hard drive to do that.

Thanks for your help!

You are probably dealing with a spyware issue.

If you have access to another computer that is working Download and install a reputable spyware removal program like Spy sweeper (www.webroot.com) and scan and clean the drive.

Or you could try to do an online free scan at housecall.trendmicro.com Its free and will remove most spyware and viruses. If you are on the internet and have no Anti-virus or Anti-Spyware protection this is more than likely your problem. Even the free stuff that you get with services like AOL are junk and will not protect you.

If you have done all that and have determined thats not the problem then its time to crack open your computer and take a look and see if the fans are spinning and that its not clogged up with dust. Make sure the video card fan is spinning if it has one. Turn on the computer with the cover off and make sure they spin fast. Use a can of compressed air to blow it out and clean out the dust.

While you are at it, take a look at the mainboard and make sure there are no leaking capacitors or bulging capacitors…use this image as a reference:

If it all looks ok, then its time to start looking at a hardware issue. I would start with a new power supply. But to make sure its not software, try formating and reinstalling windows if you can.

    .
    1. Increase your RAM
    2. Increase your paging (swap) file if you have a larger HD.

Hard to say. First guess though, have you checked it for overheating? Take the side cover off and check to see if the fans are working. Check for accumulation of dust and take a compressed air container (they sell them at almost all computer stores) and dust everything off inside the box, real good. There are many things, one of the best of course is to buy a new one.

However, if you dont think that is an option for you, you can still do the following:
    - clean up (start-all programs-accessories-system tools-disk cleanup)
defragmentation – same path as above – Disk Defragmenter (this will take long if you have not done it before or have not done it in the last few months, give it time and patience)
    -Uninstall unused programs
    -delete cookies, temporary files
    -add more RAM
